Struktur penulisan personal letter berbahasa Inggris melalui email adalah sebagai berikut:
- Subjek email. Meski berupa surat informal, subjek email dalam personal letter harus jelas dan memancing rasa ingin tahu. Subjek email bisa dibuat ringkas atau menunjukkan gambaran isi surat kita.
- Salam pembuka. Ucapan salam pembuka tentu harus ada dalam isi email kita. Kita dapat menggunakan frasa seperti “Hello”, “Hi!”, atau “Dear …”. Pemilihan frasa salam pembuka ini bisa menyesuaikan kebutuhan dan seberapa akrab kita ingin menjalin relasi dengan penerima email.
- Pembukaan. Pada bagian ini, kita coba ceritakan gambaran atau tujuan kita mengirimkan email. Dengan begitu, penerima email bisa memahami konteks pesan yang kita tujukan padanya.
- Isi surat. Karena sifatnya personal, isi dari email ini bisa berupa kisah atau cerita. Tidak ada batasan gaya bahasa karena tergantung seberapa dekat kita dengan penerima surat. Isi surat biasanya santai guna membangun keakraban. Selain itu, di dalam isi surat ini kita bisa sampaikan tujuan atau alasan mengirim email.
- Penutup. Saat menutup personal letter, kita dapat mengutarakan harapan atau keinginan tertentu. Bisa berupa harapan agar pesan tersebut dibalas, harapan bisa bertemu, dan lain-lain.
- Salam penutup. Setelah mengakhiri surat, jangan lupa berikan salam penutup. Frasa yang bisa kita gunakan misalnya “Warm regards”, “Best regards”, “Sending love from here”, dan lain-lain.
